S3 Video Bites

April 12th, 2010 1 comment

The latest craze in the Internet Marketing industry is having these blank pages with one video, and no fast forward/rewind controls.  And these videos are set up to pop up an order form, or a link for more information after the video is o ver (or starting from a key point in the video).

I love those pages.

But I have one problem with them.  They always seem to use Amazon S3 to host and serve the files, and sometimes that makes the video insanely choppy.  I don’t understand how marketers get away with that.  I’ve been missing out on a lot lately, because I just won’t sit for the choppy video any more.

I know that video is expensive, but if you’re going to do video marketing, go for better hosting!  If you insist on Amazon S3, at least use CloudFront to make the experience better!

Please?

My New Laptop… Dead.

March 21st, 2010 1 comment

So I got me a brand new laptop last week. Well, more accurately, work got it for me, and I was all excited about it. For one thing, it’s the first time I’ll be using Windows 7 outside of my home media network. I completely skipped vista, and 7 looks promising, so I’m excited.

For another thing, there were some great hardware upgrades.

So I set everything up to my satisfaction at work, bring the laptop home, boot up and ZAP the thing resets, and won’t boot any more.
Apparently, the hard disk fried.

Dammit

Good thing I didn’t throw out the old one just yet.

Anyway, hope to get a replacement in a few days, and we’ll see what happens.

My New Business (The Quiet During The Storm)

February 24th, 2010 1 comment

It’s been a while since I had the opportunity to write a bit. I’ve had an enjoyable month full of activity in all honestly, but slumped a bit in my online social activity.

So what have I done?

Well, first of all, I unveiled a really cool new feature to my splash pages, which has an audio welcome that’s customized based on what traffic exchange you’re viewing the page from. It’s really cool! To see it in action, try adding http://www.TheTrafficExchangeBook.com/ to your favorite traffic exchange and see what it looks like when you’re previewing it (try refreshing a few times, too ;) )

Then, later in the month, I started a limited beta test of my new dedicated server offerings, which you can read more about here, if that’s the kind of thing that interests you.

Finally, I broke 100 downline members at SuccessQUIK, and promised my 100th downline member a free upgrade on me, just for being number 100. Oddly enough, the guy never took me up on the offer.

*shrugs*

Anyway, just wanted to drop a quick line to say that I’m still alive, and up to new and cool stuff to keep my business growing.

I’ve also been loving the thank-you page rotator at TE Toolbox which has kept signups to various programs flowing in even when I take my hand off of the pulse of my traffic-exchange-centered business. Kudos to Tim, Jon and Paul for that!

To iPhone or To Android? That is the question…

January 12th, 2010 2 comments

So iPhone and Android seem to be the hip cellular platforms that will be with us for the next few years (so much for Windows Mobile, eh?).  It kinda sucks, because I’ve been a huge Symbian fan for years and have been bitterly disappointed by the lack of the slick apps that the iPhone has been getting.  Meanwhile, Android is starting to pick up steam, and DOES get the cool apps (well, they’re starting to, anyway).

I have an issue with Apple.  I love the way that all of their hardware and software works seamlessly together, but the bottom line is that I don’t really plan to switch all of my PCs to Macs, and therefore will have interoperability issues between Apple and other devices.

That’s really basically the only reason that it looks like I’m going to go for Android which would, presumably, have better interoperability with my other Microsoft and Linux based devices (Symbian won’t be an issue to inter-operate with anymore, I guess).  Now I just need to find a phone – preferably with 2 SIMs…

A New Type of Opt-In?

So I was checking out @timlinden’s blog where he was asking his followers what they thought of 2009, advertising wise, and saw something which I’d been waiting to see for quite a bit, although most of it was in the form of “Yeah, what she said…”.

People seem to want a better reason to sign up for your list than to get a free download.

That’s cool with me, as I’ve already got something like that going with Insta!Login – now all I’ve got to do is monetize it :D

On the subject, I’m still waiting for more people to fill out my end-of-2009 survey, but there are some interesting findings already and once I get a slightly more significant sample of answers, I’ll be sharing what I find, so fill yours out if you haven’t yet so I can get the answers out ASAP!
